The Sales Framework That Turns ‘I’ll Think About It’ Into ‘Where Do I Sign’

The Sales Framework That Turns ‘I’ll Think About It’ Into ‘Where Do I Sign’

“When selling fire extinguishers, open with fire.” – David Ogilvy

There’s a principle in advertising attributed to David Ogilvy, that stops most founders in their tracks the first time they hear it:

“When selling fire extinguishers, open with fire.”

It sounds almost too simple. But sit with it for a moment.

If you think about it, it contains the entire secret to a sales conversation that actually converts.

Nobody wakes up wanting to buy a fire extinguisher. They wake up afraid of fire. The moment you lead with the problem, the real, visceral, what-if-this-happens-to-me problem,  you have their full attention. The extinguisher sells itself.

This is exactly what GAP Selling teaches. And if you’re a founder who’s been stumbling through sales conversations, pitching features, nervously listing what’s included in your packages, wondering why people keep saying “I need to think about it” — this framework is going to reframe everything.

What Is GAP Selling?

GAP Selling is a methodology developed by sales strategist Keenan, built on one foundational truth about businesses:

People don’t buy products or services. They buy the distance between where they are and where they want to be.

That distance between their current painful reality and their desired future is the GAP. And the size of that gap is the only thing that determines whether someone buys.

Think about it from your own life anytime you have bought products like insurance or therapy or even something like an IPhone. You  bought there was gap between where you were or looked and where you desperately wanted to and the GAP felt too large and too urgent to ignore.

Your client is no different.

The three components of the GAP framework are:

  1. Current State— Where is your client right now? What’s the problem, the frustration, the plateau they’re stuck on? Not the surface problem — the one underneath it. The one keeping them up at night.
  2. Future State— Where do they want to be? What does successactually look like for them, in their words, in their world?
  3. The GAP— The emotional and practical distance between those two states. This is your entire sales conversation. This is where the decision to buy lives.

Why Founders Need to Know This

Most service business owners sell from the wrong end of the conversation.

They lead with what they offer: the deliverables, the process, the timeline, the price. They describe the fire extinguisher in meticulous detail. The pressure rating. The colour. The size of the nozzle. Meanwhile, the client doesn’t yet believe their building is on fire.

Most business owners lead with their offer even before they’ve established the problem; you’re asking someone to care about a solution to a pain they haven’t fully felt yet and then they wonder why the conversation stalls.

GAP Selling flips this entirely when you lead with fire.

You open with their current reality so that they feel understood before they feel sold to. Then, and only then, do you walk them toward what’s possible. By the time your offer enters the conversation, it doesn’t feel like a pitch. It feels like a relief.

This matters even more for service businesses, where what they are selling is invisible. You’re not handing someone a product they can hold. You’re asking them to trust that process, your expertise, and your way of seeing will change something in their business or their life. That kind of trust only comes when they feel deeply seen. And GAP Selling is the framework that creates that.

The Mistake Most People Make With This

Understanding GAP Selling intellectually is one thing. Resisting the urge to pitch prematurely is another.

The most common mistake is abandoning the framework the moment a prospect says something that sounds like an honest buying signal. They mention their budget. They ask about your availability. And suddenly, the founder switches into presentation mode — reciting packages, justifying prices, over-explaining, and eventually loses the thread of conversation.

Stay in the gap longer than feels comfortable. Keep asking questions. The more clearly they can articulate the distance between where they are and where they want to be, the more motivated they become to close it.

You are not there to convince. You are there to illuminate.

One Shift That Founders Can Make Starting Today

Before your next discovery call, write down these three things:

  • What is the most common current state of my ideal client — what is their daily reality when they find me?
  • What future state are they chasing — what do they actually want their life or business to feel like?
  • What is the specific, costly gap between those two points?

Then open with fire.

Not with your credentials or solutions or packages. But with their pain named so clearly and compassionately that they lean forward and think: he/she gets it.

That’s the moment a sales conversation becomes a real conversation. And real conversations close.
